The Landscaping Project - Day One
Jun 18th, 2005 by Hugh
We built a new house last year on a one-acre lot - pretty flat, no trees (it used to be a pasture) - perfect for a Bermudagrass turf project. I’ve been planning this out ever since we moved in, and now it’s upon me: the soil is up above 75 degrees, so it’s perfect for planting Bermuda seed.
Last week I rented a Bobcat with a tiller and landscape rake. I was going to take the soil from the high places and move it to the low places, smooth it out, and get the seedbed all perfect for sowing.
- Unfortunately, I got home to meet the delivery last week and they never showed.
- Fortunately, the rental guy said he’d do it this week for 25% off.
- Unfortunately, they lost track of the fact I rented a tiller and now they don’t have one.
- Fortunately, they rented me a soil conditioner at no charge.
- Unfortunately, the soil conditioner sprang a hydraulic leak and now the whole Bobcat doesn’t work.
- Unfortunately, the rental place is closed for the weekend.
- Fortunately, the guy who dropped off part of the equipment is a landscaper who just happened to leave me his card, so I called him.
- Fortunately, he told me I can just go buy some hydraulic fluid and I’ll be back in business.
- Unfortunately, I still can’t use the soil conditioner, since it still leaks.
With lots of time to think about just how nuts I am to be doing this, it occurs to me: this project is too big for me. But it’s not too big for the God I serve. Every time something goes wrong to discourage me, there’s a new faint glimmer of how to adapt and proceed.
Am I just being silly and “reading God into” these goings-on? Perhaps. But if it succeeds, it will be for His glory, and if it fails, it will be to my shame.
That’s just the way I like it.
Anyway, I’m off to make my first-ever purchase of Bobcat hydrostatic fluid.
More to come…

For the all powerful God who spoke time and space into existence it is no easier and no harder to fix a hydraulic leak than to keep the galaxies in place. On Grace there is no limit, large or small.
