For a little over a year now, I’ve been using the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible. Prior to that, I had been an NIV guy for about 15 years - really my whole Christ-following life.
I think the ESV is an outstanding translation - an “essentially literal” translation, it is not nearly so dynamic as the NIV, nor as difficult to read as the NASB. I think it’s time I added my name to its list of public supporters.
One question I’ve been asked in the past was, “who was on the translation committee?” The ESV website has the whole list online, but here are some of the names I was pleased to find on the oversight committee and advisory council:
I encourage everyone reading this to consider making the switch, especially if you are an NIV reader.

I’m not getting my hopes up, but at least the guys speaking for my point of view are William Lane Craig and Lee Strobel instead of Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell or somebody like that.
Then you’ve got John Shelby Spong and a bunch of like-minded scoffers on the other side of things…
I expect I’ll come away more riled up than satisfied, but at least I’ll be represented by some better spokesmen than usual.

I watched Greg Koukl square off with Dr. Deepak Chopra last night on PAX TV’s Faith Under Fire.
