Unashamed

I grew up in a religious home… a Catholic home, but I grew up wild and became a monster. When you are a monster you end up being deeply wounded. All I can tell you is that because of [Jesus'] wounds, my wounds have been healed - and if you think that sounds corny, you should know that I don’t really give a damn.

Mel Gibson, when asked why he made The Passion of the Christ

I saw a documentary on something the U.S. Navy calls “BUDS” - Basic Underwater Demolition School. It’s sort of a boot camp for Navy SEALs - weeks on end of pure trial, testing the mettle of those who would aspire to such elite service.

The really interesting thing is that you have these instructors who are basically abusive, taunting, discouraging, and generally riding the backs of all the SEAL candidates. Then, the instant one of them decides he doesn’t have what it takes, the instructors magically turn into these hospitable, polite fellows who could pass for a concierge at the finest hotel. It’s like they want the candidates to drop out. (more…)

A Milestone

I’m celebrating a milestone today with my wonderful bride, Krista - today we’ve been married for 3,000 days!

It’s funny how it seems both longer (as in, “I can’t remember what it was like without her”) and shorter (”but we’re just getting started!”) than that - but whatever it is, I’m a better man for our time together.

She is an amazing woman of such love, beauty, kindness, grace, and sweetness that she makes me want to do - and be - my very best, each and every day, for her, our children, and our Lord. What more could a man possibly want?

I love you, babe!
